In the early 1930s, an unpaved airport was constructed outside of Mexico's corporate limits. By 1949, more than 5000 planes were using Green Field. John and Ray Hagan, operators of Mexico Flying Service, donated 45 acres of land to the city in 1951; the land was to be used to build a federally funded, 2000 foot paved runway at the airport. In the late 1960s, additional federal funds allowed a 1200 foot addition. A 1974 FAA funded airport needs analysis determined a 4000 foot runway was needed with plans for a 1500 foot expansion; in 1984, they agreed to fund the project. The new access road and paved apron were completed in 1986, and the 4000 foot runway followed in 1987.
Today, the 270 acre Mexico Memorial Airport has two runways of 3200 and 5500 feet. There are many amenities available to patrons of the airport such as an onsite manager, fueling facilities, a terminal building, a courtesy car, and hangers and tie-down space.
